What's the name for a society that's the opposite of individualistic?

Today in voice, I learned something so cool from my friend Nike. (Yes, this is his nick name that he uses at Nova. He loves basketball and Michael Jordan...and his real name is Naoki.)

I asked him why in Japan if you meet someone for the first time they introduce themselves with their last name. Because that is what they do, they use their last name until they know you better. (in Japan they call it their 'family name') He said it's because in Japanese society the family comes before the self.

Now of course I knew that Eastern cultures are less individualistic than those of the West, but isn't this just the greatest example of how it is so?!! Like to actually introduce yourself to someone using your family name...because your family name identifies you MORE than your own personal name. Crazy.

Of course it should be said that this is a much older tradition and it's strength has been lost over the years, but it is definitely still practiced today, even with the young people.
